Many families invest in a cottage for summer weekend getaways to relax and enjoy the nice Canadian weather. What is not-so-relaxing is figuring out what to do with your everyday property while leaving, whether it be for the week, or for the weekend. Below are tips to guide you in preparing your home before leaving for the cottage.

Outside Preparation

  • Ask your neighbor to park in your driveway to make it seem like somebody is home and/or,
  • Put a visible light on a nightly timer
  • Trim the lawn so people around know someone is or has been home

  • Unplug small appliances
  • Turn off all water valves
  • Turn off AC (if gone longer than a day)
  • Make sure smoke detector is working properly

  • Leave emergency contact information with a close neighbor
  • Toss out all foods that will go bad
  • Make sure to take the kitchen trash out
  • Do laundry to avoid odors
  • Prepare you plants for your time away

Leaving for the cottage shouldn’t cause you any stress, but leave you feeling excited! Now go prepare your home and enjoy a stress-free vacation!!!
